JAGMOHAN SINGH
AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Gurdawara Parbhandak Committee(SGPC) on the eve of 25th anniversary of Operation Blue Star on Saturday honoured the family members of late Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala and kin of assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who was killed to revenge Operation Blue Star in Golden Temple by Indian army.
SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar who attended the anniversary function blamed the then Congress Government led by late PM Indira Gandhi for ordering military action at the Golden Temple. He said that SGPC would build up memorial in the memory of those who were killed by the bullets of Indian army in 1984 in the Golden Temple. Akal Takht Jathedar Gurbachan Singh endorsed the Makkar's decision.
Jathedar Gurbachan Singh said that many Sikh youth who were arrested during operation blue star were still languishing in jails. He demanded to release them immediately. The Khalistan slogans marked the anniversary function.
A sizable member of task force of SGPC and policemen in mufti who were present their preferred to watch scene as mute spectator and did not bother to stop anybody for raising the slogans of Khalistan. It may be mentioned here that Sikh community including SGPC and Akal Takht every year observe the anniversary of genocide day for the last 25 years.
As twenty five years back in June 1984, Indian army attacked at Golden Temple to flush out militants who were hiding in the Golden Temple. During the army attack militant’s leader Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala was killed. It is feared that nearly 3000 people including army personal were also killed. The building of Akal Takht was badly damaged which hurt the sentiments of Sikh community.
The moment Akal Takht Jathedar Jathedar concluded his religious speech, former Member parliament and president Shriomani Akali Dal Amritsar Simranjit Singh Mann raised the slogans of Khalistan in loud voice which was followed by the gathering of Sikh devotees who were present in the periphery of Golden Temple.
Simarnjit Singh Mann said, “The wounds of operation Blue Star at Golden Temple still unhealed, since attack on Akal Takht which ishighest Sikh Temporal seat for Sikh community was badly damaged in bombardment by the Indian Army. When Akal Takht was damaged Sikh community felt hurt as many of Sikhs employed in Indian Army left their job in resentment against the Indian Government”. Raising demanding for buffer state (a specific sovereign area being ruled by Sikhs) Mann said, “Buffer State should be set up at the international territory with Pakistan that should be ruled independently by Sikh community”, he quipped.
Justifying the slogans of Khalistan a devotee Ram Singh said, “There is nothing wrong if independent area is given to Sikh community where at least Sikhs would not feel suffocated and incidents like operation Blue Star would never occur”.
Chief of radical Sikh organisation Damdami Taksal Baba Harnam Singh Dhooma said, “Sikhs will never forget attack on Golden Temple by Indian army”. Dhoona is predecessor of Sant Bhindrawala in Damdami Taksal.
The family members of Bhindrawale, mother of Hardev Singh Jinda and the family members of Beant Singh and Satwant Singh who assassinated Indira Gandhi were honoured by SGPC. Jinda was a member of the militant outfit Khalistan Commando Force and one of the two assassins of Arun Vaidya, the Chief of Indian Army at the time of Operation Blue Star.
